MAJOR JAPANESE AND INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRY LEADERS TO EXAMINE CRITICAL ROLE OF GAS & LNG FOR JAPAN’S FUTURE ENERGY SECURITY

FRIDAY 28 AUGUST 2015,TOKYO: Securing Japan’s future energy security is a matter of national priority and Japan is now facing challenging decisions regarding the fuels it chooses.

Japan is by far the world’s number one consumer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), consuming more than one third of the entire global output every year. Securing Japan’s future energy security is a matter of national priority and Japan is now facing challenging decisions regarding the fuels it chooses. The need to re-engage and re-negotiate major long-term LNG and gas contracts over the next few years will help Japanese customers drive better value and flexibility in the future.

Public appetite for nuclear power remains low and the vital role played by natural gas and LNG in providing a stable, clean and reliable form of energy for the country remains paramount. Despite restarting the Kyushu Electric Power Sendai nuclear plant earlier this month, Japan’s major energy and gas companies are showing no sign of shying away from natural gas. Investment by the Japanese in North American projects has tripled in the last four years to $45billion; Japanese banks are expected to loan up to $10billion as investments towards new US LNG export projects.

In reaffirming Japan’s gas ambitions and commitment to natural gas, ten of Japan’s leading energy companies have formed the Japan Gastech Consortium to host the Gastech 2017- Conference & Exhibition; the world’s leading natural gas & LNG event.  The Japan Gastech Consortium members include: Tokyo Gas, JERA, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co., INPEX, ITOCHU, Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd.
